Xi also sent a warning to Taiwan independence advocates, who include supporters of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. "That needs to be first established". The two sides have been ruled separately since Chiang Kai-shek moved his Nationalist government across the Taiwan Strait during the Chinese civil war. Nationalist forces under Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan in December 1949 after losing a civil war to the Communists. China said that year it had given the former British local autonomy.

Chinese President Xi Jinping seeks "reunification" of self-ruled island nation with China, in a speech on anniversary of Taiwan policy change, a day after Taipei asked Beijing to respect its sovereignty. This course, he said, "gives ample consideration to Taiwan's actual situation and will help Taiwan's long-term peace and stability after unification".

"And they haven't given up the use of force", said Fabrizio Bozzato, a fellow at the Taiwan Strategy Research Association in Taipei. We are willing to use the greatest sincerity and expend the greatest hard work to strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification. He did mention the historical completion of the "Three Links" between Taiwan and China and expressed a wish that the outlying ROC islands of Kinmen and Matsu be connected by bridge to China - an idea touted in the past by Kinmen politicians. To this day, the United States has no official embassy in Taipei, and the unofficial American Institute in Taiwan performs consular services. In the a year ago or so, the Communist government has increased its pressure on multinational companies to refer to Taiwan as a part of China. He said independence for the self-governing island is against history and a dead end.

It fears Tsai wishes to push for Taiwan's formal independence, though Tsai says she wants to maintain the status quo.

Xi urged people on both sides to reach a consensus on the unification of Taiwan and China and not leave the issue for future generations.

"The majority of Taiwan's public opinion also adamantly rejects "One country, two systems", and also the "Taiwan consensus". "It's impossible. Hong Kong is a great example".

"It's so obvious that they're trying to assimilate Hong Kong into wider mainland China in every way".

Further eroding the chance of dialogue, the Taiwan president probably spoke Tuesday to deter Taiwan's opposition party mayors and magistrates from holding their own talks, said Shane Lee, political scientist with Chang Jung Christian University in Taiwan.

At the same time, Mr. Xi has brought new assertiveness to Chinese foreign policy, underpinned by the country's rising economic power and a swelling confidence that Beijing now possesses the economic, military and diplomatic sway to achieve its long-held desires. While Tsai insisted on Tuesday that the DPP's election losses were not caused by voter dissatisfaction with her cross-strait policies, Xi's conciliatory tone may have been created to appeal to new KMT mayors, who want to establish municipal-level ties with Chinese cities, and their supporters.
