New Malaysian king to be picked this month after shock abdication

He is also the ruling sultan of Kelantan, one of Malaysia's nine states.

A special meeting of the rulers was held at the palace in Kuala Lumpur to set a date for a new king to be elected, official news agency Bernama reported.

Sultan Muhammad V studied at St Cross College at Oxford and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, according to official media.

Muhammad V took the throne in December 2016, and may serve as acting King before a new monarch is selected by the Council of Rulers, the Straits Times reported.

"The Royal Malaysia Police wants the laws to be maintained but if there are certain parties who are dissatisfied, we leave it to the committee formed under the Ministry of Home Affairs (to decide)", he said.

The rotating monarchy system has been in place since independence from Britain in 1957, and Sultan Muhammad V is the first monarch to have renounced the throne.

The royal palace issued a statement saying the King resigned from his post as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Head of state) in line with provisions in the Federal Constitution and after informing the "matter officially to the Malay rulers". He also paid tribute to Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and the government for their cooperation in governing the country.

Swearing in ceremonies for Malaysian kings are lavish affairs, marked by honour guards and Islamic prayers and attended by hundreds of guests in traditional finery.

Wan Ahmad said His Majesty has decreed that Malaysians continue to remain united, practice compromise and work together in shouldering the responsibilities towards this sovereign nation so Malaysia will continue to be in peace and harmony.

On Friday, Mahathir declined to comment on rumours that Sultan Muhammad V had married a former Miss Moscow during the king's leave late previous year, saying he had no official knowledge of it. "The King would like to offer his thanks to all the state Rulers for selecting him as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong".

After Pahang is the billionaire Sultan Ibrahim Ismail of southern Johor state, who is involved in business, owns a fleet of jets and loves Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

A week ago, the king, 49, had resumed duties after spending two months on medical leave.
