  • Brazil's President Open To Possibility Of U.S. Military Base, Expresses Russia Concerns

Bolsonaro, a far-right former paratrooper intent on forging close ties with the United States and Israel, said in early November he meant to go through with the embassy move.

Retired Army General Augusto Heleno, Bolsonaro's security adviser, said that the president is planning to follow the US' lead in moving the embassy to Jerusalem, but that "logistical considerations" were in the way, Reuters reported on Thursday.

At a press conference at Brasilia's air base held after the inauguration of the new commander of Aeronautics, Bolsonaro said that the latest proposal, presented in December, could affect the interests of Brazilians, but did not go further into detail.

On Friday, asked by journalists in Brasilia about his openness to hosting a USA base, Bolsonaro said: "I have the American people as a friend".

One key test will be whether the new president can gather enough political support to take on the reform of Brazil's hugely expensive state pension obligations.

He said that "the only weighty voice speaking out against me is Iran".

Bolsonaro declared Brazil and the United States to be "friends" and said in his first post-inauguration TV interview he was open to looking at his country hosting a USA military base, citing regional instability from neighboring Venezuela and its backer Russian Federation.

New Brazilian president wants to privatise airports

Brazil is following in the footsteps of the United States, which moved its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv a year ago, a move that caused a surge of anger among Palestinians.

Bolsonaro had wavered on the embassy move after saying in early November he meant to go through with it.

Bolsonaro has repeatedly railed against the Workers Party and its supporters.

On Wednesday, Bolsonaro unveiled plans to step up privatizations, toughen prison sentencing guidelines and hand control over indigenous land claims to the powerful Agriculture Ministry.

By the end of the weekend, 300 soldiers would be patrolling the city and other towns in Ceara State in a bid to halt the rampage, Brazilian Secretary of Public Security Guilherme Teophilo said, according to government news agency Agencia Brasil. "We don't see any signs there will be any other government infrastructure to handle LGBT issues".

Nonetheless, Bolsonaro tweeted on Thursday morning that privatisation of 12 Brazilian airports and four ports should attract 7 billion reais ($1.85 billion) in initial investment.

On Tuesday, in his first public speech as president, he vowed Brazil's green-and-yellow flag "will never be red".
