Wait, what? Hyundai reveals wacky 'walking' auto concept!

That quandary is solved by modern electric auto technology, with special propulsion motors mounted inside each wheel, powered by the latest electric actuator technology.

Hyundai calls the Elevate EV the world's first vehicle with moveable legs.

By blending electric vehicle and robotics technology, the Hyundai Elevate feels like a step toward sci-fi.

The Hyundai Elevate Concept essentially combines the best elements of a rugged off-road vehicle with those of a humanoid robot (think Boston Dynamics).

Built on a modular vehicle chassis, Elevate vehicles can swap out robotic attachments for different situations, like a auto stuck in a snow ditch climbing its way back up to the road.

When in "drive-mode" with the "legs" automatically folded out of the way, the Elevate can cruise at highway speeds, just like a normal auto. Not compared to Hyundai's CES concept, anyway. Hyundai says this design is uniquely capable of both mammalian and reptilian walking gaits, allowing it to move in any direction.

"When a tsunami or quake hits, current rescue vehicles can only deliver first responders to the edge of the debris field", said John Suh, Hyundai vice president. Elevate is designed with four mechanical legs with wheels for feet and can roll along on extended legs or retract them to be driven like a vehicle. "Elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete", Suh said. This means it can function like a traditional vehicle, capable of traveling at highway speeds with passive suspension.

Earlier this week, Hyundai had released a teaser image of the Elevate electric rescue vehicle concept or in Hyundai speak, the Ultimate Mobility Vehicle (UMV).

Elevate can climb a five-foot (1.52-meter) wall, step over a five-foot gap, walk over diverse terrain, and achieve a 15-foot (4.57-m) wide track width. Suh said people living with disabilities that don't have access to an ADA ramp could hail an autonomous Hyundai Elevate that could walk up straight to their front door.

Hyundai has been working with Michigan-based industrial design firm Sundberg-Ferar on the project for three years, but has not yet built a full-size working prototype, so it is likely still years away from possibly entering production.
