Manafort accused of lying about sharing polling data with Russian

Those portions had been redacted given Mueller's sensitivities toward ongoing investigations, Manafort's lawyers said, but the redactions were able to be read in the document filed with the federal court online.
In the court papers filed Tuesday, Manafort's lawyers claimed that "he attempted to live up to the requirements of his cooperation agreement and provided meaningful cooperation relating to several key areas under current government investigation".
In addition to his ties to Kilimnik, Manafort had for years worked for Oleg Deripaska, a Russian oligarch who was sanctioned by the US Treasury in April for allegedly supporting the Kremlin's "malign activity" around the world.
"The same is true with regard to the government's allegation that Mr. Manafort lied about sharing polling data with Mr. Kilimnik related to the 2016 presidential campaign", they added in the redacted section.
Special counsel Robert Mueller submitted a filing in November accusing Manafort of breaching his plea agreement with the special counsel's office by lying to federal investigators.
Mr Mueller's team said Manafort had had a conversation with an unnamed individual who wanted "to use Mr Manafort's name as an introduction" if they ever met President Trump, according to the filings.
Mr Mueller is investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Instead, they claim that Manafort's memory was affected by early morning risings, long days of questioning, and health issues that include gout, depression, and anxiety.
What remains unknown is whether Trump or others on the campaign were aware that Manafort provided Kilimnik and Deripaska with polling data.
In the new filing, Manafort's lawyers argue that he didn't lie so much as forget.
Mr. Mueller's team said last month Manafort lied about his connection with Mr. Kilimnik and a wire transfer to a company he was working with.

The documents also reveal that prosecutors accused Manafort of lying about his contact with administration officials after Mr Trump took office.
The former official will be sentenced for those crimes in February.
Prosecutors also accused Manafort of telling a witness he "had contact" with another administration official. Kilimnik has denied any ties to Russian intelligence. The second example identified by the Special Counsel is hearsay purportedly offered by an undisclosed third party and the defense has not been provided with the statement (or any witness statements that form the basis for alleging intentional falsehoods).
Manafort, 69, was convicted in August in a separate case in Virginia, for evading taxes on $16m earned as a political consultant in Ukraine and lying to banks to get loans.
Judge Amy Berman Jackson has ordered the government to provide a detailed factual basis about Manafort's lies, which is due January 14. He is due to be sentenced in that case next month.
Manafort will not ask for a hearing regarding the prosecution's accusations, according to the filings.
Court watchers and the judge anticipated that the Manafort team would either push back on Mueller's team's assertions-like they previously indicated they would-or agree not to fight the special counsel as Manafort headed to sentencing.
