The storm eased up Saturday in St. Louis after dropping more than 10 inches of snow there.

Snow totals that topped 10 inches in parts of the Kansas City area peaked at more than 20 inches in east-central Missouri, according to 72-hour snow totals from the National Weather Service.

A massive winter storm hit the US Rockies and Plains on Friday then punched east, with snow set to assault a 1,800-mile (1,609 km) corridor through the weekend, creating transportation "havoc" in the middle of the country. "We're going to see a significant snow event for the mid-Atlantic to start the year for 2019".

Parts of central IL have registered record snowfalls after a winter storm struck and then lingered for much of the weekend.

Four people in Missouri and three in Kansas died in roadway accidents, authorities in both states reported.

Many people who went slow Saturday still lost control of their vehicles in the wet conditions, White said.

At Lambert International Airport in St. Louis, most flights were canceled or delayed on Saturday.

He says that since the snow began falling Friday, troopers in District 11 in southwestern IL have been called to 114 crashes and a total of 261 incidents, many of which involved vehicles that had veered off roadways into ditches. Philadelphia is expected to receive a few inches of snow, but areas north of there are expected to be spared, Orrison said. An American Airlines flight slid of the runway at a regional airport in Columbia, Missouri Friday afternoon according to a local news report. In anticipation of the storm, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency Saturday.

As light snow falls are expected to continue in the Midwest, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for areas in the Mid-Atlantic until Sunday afternoon.

In a suburb of Chicago, Illinois State Police Trooper Christopher Lambert was standing outside his patrol auto at the scene of a three-car crash when a driver struck him, authorities say.

The storm knocked out power for almost 200,000 people in Virginia and North Carolina on Sunday, according to PowerOutage.us. The department reported incidents and stalls on interstates overnight.

State Police Director Leo Schmitz told reporters that 34-year-old Christopher Lambert was headed home when he pulled over and got out of his squad auto to respond to the accident.

While the storm will spare the heavily populated Northeast, it likely will disrupt air and auto travel from Kansas City to Indianapolis, and will bring the heaviest snowfall so far this winter to Cincinnati and the Ohio River Valley, said AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Walker.

Those lanes remained closed at 4:30 p.m.at the highway's intersection with State Road 25, but Hampton said they were expected to reopen to traffic by early evening once the crash site is cleaned up.
