Jayme Closs: authorities search for motive in 'tragic' kidnapping case

  • Gordon Wisconsin. Nutter walking her dog near the cabin she owns with her husband Forrest on January 10 encountered Jayme Closs coming out of nearby woods

Their bodies were found October 15 after a mysterious 911 call led deputies to their home in Barron, Wisconsin.

The man suspected of kidnapping a Wisconsin teenager and killing her parents with a shotgun almost three months ago appears to have led an unremarkable existence until that fateful night, blending into the state's vast northwestern forests.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said investigators are trying to figure out what happened to Jayme during her captivity and why she was seized, and gave no details on how she escaped except to say Patterson was not home at the time.

"When I first got out of the house, I didn't know how to trust, what to say, how to say it".

Authorities said they believed Closs was Patterson's "only target" and was taken against her will. They said there is nothing to indicate that he knew or had contact with the family before the incident, and said they do not know how he came to fixate on Jayme.

The few neighbours who know Patterson's family say he grew up in a cabin in a remote development that's a mix of seasonal and year-round homes about 10 miles (16 kilometers) outside Gordon proper.

"It was awesome. The stress, the relief - it was awesome", Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said, describing the moment he learned Closs had been found. He quit the next day, saying he was moving, Mr Steve Lykken said.

Patterson's lawyers Charles Glynn and Richard Jones said in a statement they consider the situation "very tragic" and that they are relying on the court system to treat their client fairly. Their bodies were discovered on October 15. A 911 call was placed from Denise Closs's cell phone.

Jayme's aunt, Jennifer Smith, posted on Facebook that Jayme was doing well.

Local, state and federal investigators searched for the teen for months.

The girl's name rose to the top of the FBI's missing persons list, and authorities offered a US$50,000 reward for information leading to her recovery.

The search and tips had not yielded any clues before Jayme reappeared. I figured if they hadn't found her by now that the person that did this didn't want her dead, so I had hope.

She escaped and ran to a vacation cabin where Jeanne Nutter was just returning from walking her dog at around 4:30 pm Thursday.

It won't happen quickly, though, Bowers said, and people need to realize that Jayme will relive her trauma in different ways throughout her life - including if she forms romantic relationships or has children of her own.

With Jayme, the nation knows her, her captor and will learn of any charges. "She's the one who helped us break this case", Fitzgerald said.

The 13-year-old is now in the care of other family members after her 88-day ordeal in captivity.

A shotgun believed to have been used by Patterson to shoot open the door to the Closs' home has been recovered by officers.

People in both Minong and Gordon say they really didn't see the Pattersons much, either.

Following his arrest, Patterson's family, including his mother and brother, "shut down their social media accounts", the Star Tribune reported.

Detectives believe Closs was held by suspected abductor, Jake Thomas Petterson, 21, in a rural cabin near where she was spotted, and about 60 miles from her family home in Barron.
