  • Report: Oakland A's to Meet With Kyler Murray to Discuss Entering NFL Draft

The Oklahoma quarterback has until Monday to declare for the National Football League draft or stick with baseball.

The Oakland #Athletics have a contingent, led by president Billy Beane, meeting today with Heisman Trophy victor Kyler Murray in hopes of persuading him to forego the #NFL and play baseball for them.

While the draft declaration won't tip Murray's hand, he is facing a decision. It makes sense for the A's - if they are going to offer it - to wait until then to offer him the hefty amount. Vice president of baseball operations Billy Beane and general manager David Forst were among the A's leading representatives.

MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported that MLB sent marketing executives to the meeting to outline Murray's potential earnings in a baseball career. A report last week said the Athletics believe he will declare for the draft Sunday.

So even if Murray was the last pick in the first round, he actually would bank more guaranteed money than he now has with the A's.

Murray, a center fielder, received a $4.66 million signing bonus from the Athletics, but his contract allowed him a return to Oklahoma for a final season of college football. The A's are in a tough spot with the possibility of losing Murray entirely.

Major League Baseball clearly understands Murrays' dynamism. And it would reportedly be willing to waive a rule to keep him from heading to the NFL.

But since National Football League contracts aren't fully guaranteed, Murray could risk leaving lots of cash on the table if he were to be seriously injured or if he didn't perform up to expectations.

Last week, the Athletics were dealt a huge blow when they found out that Kyler Murray would likely forego playing baseball for them and enter his name into the NFL Draft instead.
