Mr Corbyn was also criticised by Labour MPs for refusing to take up the prime minister's offer of cross-party talks in an attempt to break the Brexit deadlock in parliament.

Even if a deadline extension were granted - and that's a big if, because it would require the consent of all 27 remaining countries - Brussels would want a specific plan from May on how she'd get a deal through Parliament rather than repeating her same failed strategy.

In a speech in Hastings, a marginal constituency currently held by Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd, Mr Corbyn said that after Tuesday's vote it was "clear that her European Union deal is now finished".

The Labour leader said the "best outcome" for the United Kingdom remains a general election as he raised the prospect of tabling a fresh no-confidence motion in the government, despite Mrs May winning Wednesday's vote.

"The essential first step is for the government to say "we will not do that because it's in nobody's interest for that to happen".

The motion was brought by Opposition Leader Jeremy Corbyn after Mrs May's proposed Brexit deal was defeated by the largest margin in Commons history - 230 votes - on Tuesday evening (local time).

"I'm not convinced she's willing to loosen any of the red lines she's set herself", said the Green MP.

Doug Gurr, head of Amazon UK, reportedly said ruling out a no deal would give "comfort" to global boards.

LONDON-Prime Minister Theresa May will try on January 17, to break the impasse in Britain's political elite over how to leave the European Union by searching for an emergency exit deal, though there is so far little sign of compromise.

Once practically unthinkable, a second vote is now talked of as a genuine option.

The government has handed out the one-page memo - setting out how a new people's vote would be organised - to MPs involved in Brexit talks.

"There is still a long way to go, but hopes of a mutually beneficial solution are growing", he said.

Meanwhile the Daily Telegraph warned that parliament "may be planning a betrayal". "At least it is a plan; but is parliament capable of delivering on the referendum result, or is this the start of a great betrayal of that vote?"

The move intensified pressure on Mr Corbyn to move quickly, after senior Labour figures indicated that the party was ready to table repeated no-confidence challenges to Mrs May if yesterday's vote did not succeed in ousting her.

"It's clear that her European Union deal is now finished".

He said labour will put down its own amendments to the bills next week, setting out an alternative plan which includes a permanent customs union with the European Union, a single market relationship and a guarantee to keep pace with EU rights at work, environment protections and consumer standards.

Yet she also hinted at the possibility of delaying Brexit.

But it's unclear whether he can do either of those things without irrevocably alienating his party's pro-leave faction.

Mr Gardiner said that neither Mr Corbyn nor his frontbench team were taking part in discussions with the Government while no-deal remained on the table.

It was the chance for MPs to ratify the Prime Minister's proposed Brexit deal.
