  • This is Cadillac’s first fully electric car

Though nothing else is yet revealed, it can be safe to assume that it will follow the Cadillac legacy and will be an SUV, or a crossover, albeit with a completely electric powertrain.

Cadillac President Steve Carlisle promised that the new model "will bring together luxury and innovation".

One interesting space to watch is the low cost or entry-level electric vehicles.

While there has been talk for over a decade that Cadillac will be relaunched in Australia, GM Holden appears no closer to making it happen after the reintroduction was postponed during the global financial crisis in 2008.

The teaser came as part of the 2019 Detroit Auto Show for the 2020 Cadillac XT6, a three-row crossover utility vehicle powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 engine. A company press release said the new automobile reflects GM's move toward all-electric vehicles in the future. GM said its gearing up to position Cadillac as a luxury rival to the current segment leader, Tesla.

"The most advanced components within this platform are the drive units and battery cells, both of which are being designed for maximum usability throughout GM vehicle lineups in different countries", Cadillac said in a release.

A key question is whether the Cadillac name still carries enough cutting-edge cachet to attract high-tech early adopters, or whether those are even the buyers who might be looking for an electric luxury vehicle by 2022.

However, past year Cadillac parent-company General Motors announced it will recruit 150 engineers to form the Australian division of the Advanced Vehicle Development team, who will focus on autonomous and electric technologies.

"The flexible platform will provide a broad array of body styles and will be offered in front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel configurations".
