The fact that there were discussions for a Moscow project at any point during the campaign has undermined repeated denials from Trump that his company had any business dealings in Russian Federation or that he had anything to do with Russian Federation at all. But the new report indicates that Trump was in talks for the deal when he was calling for an end to Russian sanctions and questioning the legitimacy of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Trump Tower Moscow, according to a letter of intent signed by Trump, was to include prime office space, a 15-story hotel area, a fitness center, and a luxury spa that could be branded with Ivanka Trump's name.

The project and the length of discussions around have been subject to a changing narrative and is a key part of the legal saga facing Cohen, Trump's former attorney. "They alleged there were texts and emails that corroborated that Cohen was saying the president told him to lie".

Schiff said he has asked Cohen to testify before the committee.

In one interview, Giuliani said Trump had been in talks over the proposed Moscow Trump Tower project throughout the presidential campaign, possibly as late as October or November 2016. All of those statements were false, according to court papers.

Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee who appeared as a guest on the same show as Giuliani, said, "That is news to me". Those statements turned out to be lies.

Negotiations for a Trump deal in Moscow occurred around the same time that the Russian government was interfering in the 2016 USA election.

Warner, whose panel is conducting its own Russia probe, said the possibility that Trump pursued a business deal with Russia until as late as the 2016 election increases the need to know about his dealings as president with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

Cohen was sentenced in December to three years in prison for financial crimes, lying to Congress and for two violations of campaign finance law.

- January 18, 2019: In a rare public statement, a spokesman for special counsel Robert Mueller disputes the BuzzFeed report.

However, Peter Carr, a spokesperson for special counsel Robert Mueller's office said that BuzzFeed's description of specific statements to the office of the special counsel, Robert Mueller, and characterisation of documents and testimony received by the office regarding Cohen's Congressional testimony was not correct.

McCall said few viewers would have any idea that NBC has such a tight financial relationship with BuzzFeed and that it is incumbent upon the station to be transparent about it.

Giuliani also had to explain comments he made in a seperate interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo the previous week in which he appeared to suggest that Trump's associates may have colluded with Russian Federation during the 2016 election.

In a follow-up statement, Giuliani said his comments were "hypothetical" and did not represent the "actual timing or circumstances of any discussions".
