Government shutdown causes halt to arrivals at NY airport

  • The strain of a 34-day partial government shutdown is weighing on the nation's air-travel system

Representatives said employees are not able to perform critical tasks, while others are working without paychecks.

The FAA's response so far has been that, "Safety is the top priority..." Nothing else matters except safety. "We're holding up our end of the bargain".

Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, wrote on Twitter that the shutdown "has already pushed hundreds of thousands of Americans to the breaking point".

The Federal Aviation Administration said ground delays remained in effect at La Guardia, the NY region's third-largest airport, while the airport in Atlanta, one of the world's busiest, is at Code Red, with flight delays of one hour. A ground stop was briefly issued at LaGuardia, but has since been lifted.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported "slight increase in sick leave" Friday at its air traffic control facilities in Jacksonville and D.C. that control high-altitude air traffic over seven states. The airline industry's three biggest unions said "we are not confident that system-wide analyses of safety reporting data, which is used to identify and implement corrective actions in order to reduce risks and prevent accidents is 100% operational due to reduced FAA resources". WestJet said it began seeing delays and cancellations earlier on Friday, and expects more unless air traffic control staffing levels at some US airports improves. President Trump and Congressional Democrats are still at stalemate over billions of dollars in funding for a wall along the US border with Mexico, a key campaign promise.

The halting of flights "is exactly what AFA and other aviation unions have been warning would happen", the Association of Flight Attendants union said in a statement.

Financial hardship due to the government shutdown has prompted some federal airport workers to call out of work causing some passenger interruptions. They are tired, worried, and distracted - but they won't risk our safety.

"Naturally, a plane load of Canadians was patient and polite", said Mr. Matlow, who was travelling to see his daughter Orli Matlow perform at a comedy show in Brooklyn. About 420,000 of them, including the air traffic controllers, were considered "essential" and were ordered to go to work despite not receiving regular paychecks.

Some 800,000 federal workers have had to work without pay or have been kept from doing their jobs as Trump and congressional Democrats were locked in a stalemate over the billions of dollars that Trump has demanded to build a U.S. -Mexico border wall.

John Hitt, a 51-year-old lawyer based in Boston, had expected to fly to Milwaukee via LaGuardia on Friday morning to visit his terminally ill aunt, but Delta Air Lines told him his flight was delayed for at least two and a half hours.

Flight delays are just one ancillary outcome of the shutdown that have affected air travel.

"We are monitoring the ongoing delays at some airports", she said in an emailed statement.

Then the flight was delayed again until 11 a.m. ET.

He also said they would receive the full back-pay they have missed.
