  • Trump Bows to Democrats Temporarily Ends Shutdown Without WallMore

CNN has been reporting all week that the White House has been working on declaring a national emergency and would get funds to build the wall from various government sources, including the military.

But on Friday, he reversed course in the face of mounting public pressure, declining poll numbers, escalating air travel delays and anger from the Federal Bureau of Investigation director he selected.

Mulvaney said Sunday that part of the reason the government was reopened was to "take the Democrats at their word" that they would be willing to negotiate the terms of a border barrier deal.

What sounded like a contingency plan has taken on a new significance with the president's recent statements.

"And you know, the important thing, I think, to remember here is, Democrats and Republicans cannot only reach an agreement on border security, we already have multiple times".

Let me be very clear: We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier.

The senior administration official said Pelosi, in taking on the president so directly, might have hurt some of her fellow Democrats in districts won by Trump in 2016.

While some of his backers rallied around the president, stalwart Trump allies joined in the criticism.

Mulvaney, speaking on "Fox News Sunday" two days after Trump agreed to reopen the federal government despite not receiving any money for his wall, also suggested that Trump, for now, is sticking to his request for $5.7 billion.

This raised pressure to reach a deal - and Trump buckled, even at the risk of angering his right-wing voter base. Far-right websites described Trump as caving.

Pelosi was also dismissive of what Trump thinks of her, according to the Daily Beast, when she was asked about being with the president when the cameras aren't rolling.

Steve Scalise says he is hopeful that a new border security deal will include funding for the wall. Pelosi, who outfoxed him in the five-week showdown, had insisted he not deliver his speech until government reopened.

"I think the American people are exhausted of watching the government where people get locked down for no reason except maybe political reasons", Blunt said, adding that Trump has changed his demands on border security as he's learned more about the problem.

But he maintained that Trump was ready to use emergency powers to secure the border if Democrats continued to baulk at his demands. "They would not come to the table", Gidley said.

The White House said on Friday night that Donald Trump will "move forward" with funding for a wall along the southern border "with our without the Democrats".

"The lesson I hope that the Democrats learn here is that they can't just not negotiate".

Hundreds of government facilities began to come back online following the 35-day partial closure, meanwhile, as hundreds of thousands of furloughed employees awaited back pay the administration promised would arrive by the end of the week.

In another piece, he seemingly portrayed the president as a shark attacking federal workers affected by the shutdown.

Trump's job approval ratings drooped from an already anaemic 40 percent down into the mid-30s, a troubling sign as he looks ahead to a 2020 re-election battle, already clouded by the prospect of more headlines from a Russian election meddling probe.

By the time President Donald Trump capitulated Friday, ending the shutdown, Pelosi had burnished her image as the shrewd, steely and unquestioned leader of her party.
