Facing Divided Congress, Trump Calls for Unity

Pelosi's goal for Tuesday night, experts said, was to convey firmness and self-control. Their opposition was on vivid display as Democratic congresswomen in the audience formed a sea of white in a nod to early 20th-century suffragettes. The document, obtained by Bloomberg News, shows how the president's aides are trying to orchestrate an echo chamber of accolades for Mr Trump's address, instructing supporters who may be interviewed by media on what adjectives to use as they deliver praise.

However, last week, women on both sides of the aisle were invited to wear white by the Democratic Women's Working Group. Among the guests invited to sit with the first lady, Melania Trump, during the speech were three family members of a couple killed last month in their home in Reno, Nevada, allegedly by an immigrant in the us illegally.

US President Donald Trump acknowledged women in Congress during his speech.

Communications specialist and speech coach Ruth Sherman saw "good moments, affectionate moments that warm him up to a country that needs to warm up to him".

The past and potentially future presidential candidate has done the same thing previously, but he's been criticized this year for trying to upstage or take attention away from Abrams and her historic speech.

Abortion is an issue that excites many conservatives - especially white, self-described evangelicals - and in Tuesday's speech, Trump appealed to that demographic with sharp criticism of new, controversial abortion measures in Virginia and NY. New Mexicans look at the dysfunction and the backwards agenda of the Trump administration, and they see a government that just isn't answering to the American people.

A year ago, Trump made a similar plea for bread-breaking with Democrats, only to have the year swallowed up by scorched-earth congressional elections, a divisive fight over Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and finally the 35-day government shutdown.

For all of Trump's talk about bridging "old divisions" and pursuing bipartisan initiatives, Trump previewed the well-trod themes that will power his 2020 re-election campaign: a hard line on immigration and border security, a deep suspicion of trade deals, and an "America First" foreign policy.

On Jan. 25, Trump returned to the Rose Garden to announce that he would sign a spending package to end the shutdown even though it did not include money to address a crisis that threatens the nation's safety. Many other men wore white ribbons of support.

On immigration, the CBS survey found 72 percent approved of what the president said about the issue and 28 percent opposed his views. January respondents essentially gave the same answers before and after the shutdown ended. She lost in a very close and controversial race to Republican Brian Kemp by just about 1.4 percentage points, The Washington Times shared.

The speech painted a portrait of menacing immigrants endangering Americans and a sharp challenge to Congress to build the wall.
