Measles is so contagious that if one person has it, 90 percent of the people close to that person who are not yet immune could become infected. Ten states including Texas have reported measles cases; the states are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas and Washington.
"Getting vaccinated protects you as well as those who are unable to receive vaccines due to age or medical conditions", said Michelle Beall, Pharm.D., Clinical Pharmacist, Brookshire Grocery Company.
Orders for two types of measles vaccines in Clark County were up almost 500 percent in January compared to the same month a year ago, jumping from 530 doses to 3,150, according to state health department figures. Other symptoms include a high fever over 101 degrees, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. Health officials say the shots are safe and effective, providing about 93 percent protection with one dose and 97 percent with two doses.
