That doesn't mean the child was "patient zero" of the outbreak, Armstrong noted, because it doesn't meant they started the outbreak, just that they were the first confirmed case by Public Health.

This lead to distrust in vaccinations after concerns were made public by the manufacturers regarding its potential side effects.

Kate Brown is urging residents to get vaccinated as public health officials in OR and Washington report a combined 55 confirmed cases of measles.

It comes as the city of Washington in the United States declared a measles state of emergency, and the measles death toll in south-east Asia continues to rise.

The data released on Thursday shows that 82,596 people contracted the measles in 47 of 53 countries in the WHO-classified European Region between January and December a year ago.

World Health Organization recognised that in parts of Europe, vaccinations are growing, but the organisation says countries such as Ukraine and Romania have regressed.

Julie Graham, a spokesperson for Washington State Department of Health, said that vaccine rates in Clark County have jumped up dramatically both among children and adults. It is also easily preventable through vaccination.

The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is recommended for children because it protects against three potentially serious viral illnesses.

"There's no reason we should be having this outbreak", says Melnick. Yet one or two out of every 1,000 children who get measles will die from complications, according to the CDC.

Health experts say the Clark County measles outbreak appears to be encouraging people to get vaccinated.

The case has not been linked to any other cases at this time, the health department said. Health investigators in the city have determined that the first case was identified in an unvaccinated child who was exposed to measles during travel to Israel.

Europe is not the only country impacted by a spike in measles cases.

So far in the USA this year, about 80 cases of measles have been reported, with two outbreaks ongoing in Washington and NY states. However, it can not make us blind to the people and places that are still being missed.

Data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2017 ChildVaxView Report, which details MMR vaccination coverage among children 19-35 months by state and region using data from the National Immunization Survey-Child from 2017, reports that Washington state has the sixth lowest coverage rate in the nation at 88.5%. In Washington state, permissive vaccination rules are being blamed for the outbreak. More than 1,700 hundred adults have been vaccinated since the third week of January.
