Fairfax Denies Second Allegation, Refuses To Resign

  • Virginia state Sen. Tommy Norment

It's in reference to the blackface admissions by Governor Ralph Northam and Attorney General Mark Herring, and sexual assault allegations against Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax.

Despite his denials of Watson's charge, Fairfax in the statement bizarrely expounded on the importance of listening to women who claim they were victims of sexual; assault or misconduct.

Under state law, the lieutenant governor may be impeached by the House of Delegates and prosecuted before the Senate for malfeasance in office, corruption, neglect of duty, or other high crimes and misdemeanor.

Fairfax said the allegation was part of a "vicious and coordinated smear campaign" orchestrated against him. I'd never convict someone on a bare allegation, with no hard evidence to support it and no corroboration at the time of the assault.

"As one of seven working on a 359-page yearbook, I can not endorse or associate myself with every photo, entry, or word on each page".

In a statement, Fairfax said: "I deny this latest unsubstantiated allegation".

Trump, who previously called for Northam's resignation, commented on the widening scandal again on Twitter.

Fairfax vowed to clear his "good name", and noted he has passed Federal Bureau of Investigation background checks and run for office "with nothing like this being raised before".

Although the Democratic Party has taken nearly a zero-tolerance approach to misconduct among its members in this #MeToo era, a housecleaning in Virginia could be costly: If all three Democrats resigned, Republican House Speaker Kirk Cox would become governor. Fairfax has denied the allegation and, according to NBC News, attempted to disredit Tyson in a private meeting and referred to her as a "b***h".

Earlier in the week, Vanessa Tyson, a professor of political science at Scripps College, came forward with an allegation that Justin Fairfax had sexually assaulted her in 2004, while they were at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. Northam doesn't want to leave, the legislature can't make him leave, and Fairfax's and Mark Herring's scandals have diminished his critics' appetite for pushing him out.

If neither of the three top Democrats in the state can serve as governor, the next person in the line of succession is Republican Virginia House Speaker Kirk Cox.

"The lieutenant governor of Virginia presides over the Virginia Senate and must be prepared to fill the role of governor", the lawmakers said.

The second allegation against Fairfax rounds out a wild week in Virginia politics that ends with the top three Democrats elected to statewide office engulfed in controversy.

The Smith Mullin statement said the alleged attack on Watson "was premeditated and aggressive", while also saying Fairfax and Watson "were friends but never dated or had any romantic relationship".

Fairfax denied that accusation.

"I believe this moment can be the first small step to open a discussion about these hard issues", Northam said.

Norment went on to say he was not in any of the photos "referenced on pages 82 or 122, nor did I take any of the photos in question".

A number of top Virginia and national Democrats called for investigation - not resignation - in response to the first allegation leveled by Tyson, but there was a sense in Richmond that more allegations could shift that calculation for Democrats in the state.

We believe Dr. Vanessa Tyson.
