After profanity-laced AAF washout, Christian Hackenberg may be out of options

  • Orlando Apollos rout Atlanta in AAF debut, 40-6

According to TVByTheNumbers, almost 3.2 million people watched the pregame and 2.91 million stuck with the broadcast for the actual action between the Orlando Apollos vs. Atlanta Legends and the San Antonio Commanders vs. San Diego Fleet.

Five teams, the Birmingham Iron, Salt Lake Stallions, Orlando Apollos, and San Diego Fleet, and San Antonio Stallions will be hosted by a market without a professional football team.

Memphis' offensive ineptitude wasn't all on Hackenberg. If the Penn State alum had been selected with a pick more commensurate with his talent-say, a late third-day pick or undrafted free-agent status-the fact that he never threw a regular-season pass for the Jets wouldn't be such a big deal. So, who are the notable players on the rosters, who are the teams and what does the schedule look like?

Christian Hackenberg's AAF debut did not go well. Sunday was an opportunity for him to do that after a few frustrating years in the NFL.

He wound up being taken by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2016 National Football League draft, but failed to see any action in two years with the team. Instead, Josh McCown, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty and Geno Smith earned starts in that two-year time frame.

Like Spurrier, Mike Martz and Mike Singletary, Childress was among the first big-name additions to the AAF roster, bringing a plethora of NFL experience to the upstart league.

After the interception by Steven Johnson Jr., the Hotshots got the ball back to go in and score and expand their lead to 35-16 and almost grab control of this game. Hackenberg landed on the Cincinnati Bengals' practice squad in September only to be cut in November. He was out of the league by 2018, and judging from Sunday's game, it was pretty easy to tell why.

"There's nothing wrong with him mentally", Lee said. We are getting away from kickoffs for two reasons.

"I just heard the gate", he added.

And, there was just enough razzle-dazzle and imaginative play-calling in the Apollos' 40-6 victory over the Legends to remind the faithful, who can buy season tickets for as little as $75, of the good old days.
