  • President Trump Preps for El Paso Rally

"They'll make it sound like they had more people than we do". Former El Paso state Representative Beto O'Rourke will be speaking at this event and one of the highlights will be the Baby Trump balloon that will be flying at the event. "How bad it that?"

"The border city of El Paso, Texas, used to have extremely high rates of violent crime - one of the highest in the county, and considered one of our nation's most risky cities", Trump said in the address. But that's not true. But many in El Paso, site of Trump's rally Monday night, say the city was safe for decades and embodies a cross-border spirit that transcends walls rather than prove they work. In fact, "El Paso's violent crime rate dropped 62 percent from its peak in 1993 to 2007, a year before constriction on the fence began", the resolution states.

Some kind of barrier has always divided El Paso from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, which is located directly to its south. Construction on the border fencing began in 2008 and ended in 2009, as CNN noted after Trump's claim.

The Trump campaign released a video showing El Paso residents saying the wall helped reduce crime.

That includes O'Rourke, a potential 2020 candidate, who came close to unseating Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. He cast himself as deeply opposed to the president's rhetoric on immigration. So far, O'Rourke has not made a decision.

The El Paso rally is Trump's first since the November midterm elections and comes at a precarious moment for his presidency.

The resolution stated that Trump, in his State of the Union address last week, "falsely stated that El Paso was one of the most unsafe cities in the United States until the construction of border fencing". Weakened by the longest government shutdown in American history, Trump is also contending with the ongoing investigation into Russian election meddling and a flurry of investigations by newly empowered majority Democrats in the House.
