  • The Donald Trump administration will direct agencies to prioritise AI investments in research and development increase access to federal data and models for that research and prepare workers to adapt to the era of AI

President Donald Trump signed the executive order launching the "American Artificial Intelligence Initiative", which is aimed at spurring innovation and maintaining the edge the USA now holds in a field of quickly growing competitors.

The order will strengthen America's global position in artificial intelligence (AI) competition by boosting investment in AI research and development, setting standards for systems development and deployment and creating a workforce that is capable of supporting AI technologies.

The White House plan that Trump signed Monday doesn't include any funding details.

There was no specific funding announced for the initiative, the administration official said on a conference call, adding that it called for better reporting and tracking of spending on AI-related research and development.

The statement made no mention of China, but called for "an action plan to protect the advantage of the USA in AI and technology critical to United States national and economic security interests against strategic competitors and foreign adversaries". The initiative will direct federal agencies to prepare federal workers for changes in the job market and spearhead retraining programs such as apprenticeships, fellowships, and skill-based technial education.

International Engagement: The initiative calls for the United States to work with other nations on collaborative AI development, but do so in a way that protects American "values and interests".

"The United States must foster public trust and confidence in AI technologies and protect civil liberties, privacy, and American values in their application in order to fully realize the potential of AI technologies for the American people", the executive order stated.

The order calls for agencies that provide educational grants to prioritize AI within those existing programs, in an effort to equip current and future generations of American workers with the proper skills to develop and apply AI technologies.

Trump envisioned AI technology affecting almost every federal department and agency, creating new opportunities for efficiency while simultaneously raising concerns about privacy rights.

The order - dubbed the American AI Initiative - is expected to give guidance on regulation.

Brynjolfsson said it's important for US policymakers to not only push the AI technology frontier, but also think hard about values and how the technology is implemented. The socialist country set aside $150 billion for industrial investment, prompting a number of other countries with strong tech sectors, including South Korea, the UK, France and Canada, to launch their own AI investment initiatives.

Despite Thursday's announcement lacking detail around funding, many feel the executive order will focus energy and attention on AI.
