Here's how to enable "Dark Mode" on Facebook Messenger

  • A nice way for users to try out the dark mode even though it's not yet complete

In the last few days, Facebook has started quietly rolling out a secret "dark mode" for Messenger that gives the app an inverted, white-text-on-black-background look.

After that, you'll see an animation of a bunch of moons falling down from the top of the app, together with the query to enable the dark mode option in the app's settings.

Sending the crescent moon will first send the symbols raining down the chat screen, before a message pops up: 'You Found Dark Mode!'

Facebook is testing Dark Mode for iOS and Android Messenger users ahead of its official launch.

Enabling the mode is done in a bit of an odd way: You have to send a moon emoji to someone, specifically the half crescent. Twitter-which has always been a pioneer of the inverted color scheme-and Reddit already have a darker display mode that users can toggle between.

There are several moon emoji. It's not clear why it didn't come with an obvious button or toggle in the settings menu that lets users quickly enable it - but it's not to hard to unlock it yourself. You'll also need to ensure you're running the latest version of Facebook Messenger.

There are many moons in our screenshot, so we've pointed to the emoji you'll need to send. Just tap on "Try in Settings" and then enable the "Dark Mode" Toggle.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduces a new messenger platform at the F8 summit in San Francisco, California, on March 25, 2015. Whereas, some users were so lucky that they have reported instances of a pop-up window that enabled Messenger's dark mode for them.
