Google Patches Zero-Day Flaw in Chrome Under Active Attacks

  • Update Google Chrome

The reason he is sounding the alarm is because the latest update to Chrome mitigates a zero-day security hole labeled as CVE-2019-5786. For example, all Apple Mac users are now exposed to a zero-day vulnerability first detailed March 4 that has yet to be patched.

Google issued a warning about the attacks yesterday in an update to a post about a Chrome update released on March 1 that contained one security fix. Google stated that the security flaw was to do with a memory management error in the browsers FileReader API which allows web apps to read files that are present on a user's computer.

Chaouki Bekrar, CEO of exploit broker Zerodium, noted the bug was reportedly a remote code execution flaw that allowed malicious code to escape the Chrome sandbox, which would allow an attacker to compromise the operating system.

A fix for the flaw has been shipped with the latest desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux) and Android Chrome versions, as well as that for Chrome OS. In a series of tweets, Leading Chrome Security and Desktop Engineer Justin Schuh said that previous zeroday Chrome exploits targeted Flash components that could be updated without any user intervention.

Protect yourself from a new zero-day vulnerability by ensuring that your installation of Google Chrome is updated to the latest version. Google also says it is aware of the vulnerability being actively exploited in the wild. This will tell users whether their browser is updated or if they need to restart their device to trigger the updated, patched version of the browser. "We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven't yet fixed".
