"Leaving Neverland", the controversial two-part documentary featuring two men accusing late King of Pop Michael Jackson of sexually abusing them as children, got more eyeballs in the United Kingdom than in the US.

The first part of Leaving Neverland drew in an audience 1.29 million viewers on Sunday night, says HBO, which was the third-largest audience for a documentary on the network in the last ten years.

Jackson's music has nearly completely disappeared from New Zealand's airwaves as their two top radio networks, NZME and MediaWorks, pulled his songs off the air.

The decisions not to play Jackson's music will no doubt further tarnish his brand and could result in a loss of radio royalties.

According to Vanity Fair, major US radio stations do not appear to have stopped playing Jackson's songs.

Both men separately sued the Jackson estate in 2013 for the abuse they suffered as children but both lawsuits were dismissed.

The film's United Kingdom premiere was marked by a large protest outside Channel 4's Horseferry Road offices in Westminster on Wednesday (6 March), with more than 100 people gathered to voice their support of Jackson and his innocence.

Michael Jackson died in 2009 following an overdose of the anaesthetic propofol.

Cogeco spokeswoman Christine Dicaire says the action is a response to listener reactions to the documentary.

Two men, James Safechuck and Wade Robson, allege in the Channel 4 documentary, Leaving Neverland, that they were sexually abused by the superstar.

But while DJs, radio stations and fans are dropping his hits from their playlists, at least two music museums in Detroit and Tennessee aren't scrubbing the King of Pop from their exhibits.

It's not the first time that radio has reacted to allegations of sexual misconduct through the removal of an artist's catalogue.

There had been persistent rumours of throughout Jackson's life, but no allegations were ever substantiated.

In 1993, James did defend Michael in his 1993 child sex abuse trial, but denied to in the 2005 trial.

Gathering outside the headquarters of British TV network Channel 4, the channel on which the documentary will be aired Wednesday and Thursday, a group of fans clutched photos and chanted in unison: "Facts don't lie, people do".
