NVIDIA buys high-performance chip-maker Mellanox for $6.9 billion

Nvidia is nearing an agreement to buy Israeli chipmaker Mellanox Technologies, which would help it gain technology used to speed the flow of information around data centres, sources familiar with the matter said.
That in turn has increased demand for products from both NVIDIA and Mellanox.
Calcalist said that Nvidia would have an advantage over Intel in its bid, as it would have a greater chance of getting both USA and Chinese regulatory approvals, given that Intel and Mellanox control the market for InfiniBand technology, a computer-networking communications standard that is used in high performance computers.
Reutersreported about the deal on Sunday. Intel and Mellanox did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
As artificial intelligence workloads become the norm, Nvidia with Mellanox be more an architecture play. The company, is based in Israel and the United States, had a market capitalization at the end of trading on Friday of about $5.9 billion.
Intel and Mellanox have said absolutely nothing about the deal but then that is to be expected. We should expect this deal to cement in this week, leading directly into NVIDIA's biggest event of the year: the GPU Technology Conference, or GTC.
Data centre revenue accounts for almost a third of Nvidia's sales. The segment is important as a slowdown in China and a fading cryptocurrency craze have started to weigh on Nvidia's overall sales in recent quarters. That gap may reflect concern that chip deals have foundered on regulatory approval delays and blocks amid a trade dispute between China and the U.S.
"We're excited to unite Nvidia's accelerated computing platform with Mellanox's world-renowned accelerated networking platform under one roof to create next-generation datacenter-scale computing solutions".
Meanwhile, with NVIDIA's own datacenter and HPC revenues growing by leaps and bounds over the last few years - thanks in big part to the machine learning boom - NVIDIA has chose to expand their datacenter product portfolio by picking up Mellanox.
