Following reports that Huawei is suing the USA government, the Trump administration has informed the German government it will limit its intelligence sharing if it allows Huawei to build Germany's 5G infrastructure.

While the embassy would not confirm the report, a spokesman told AFP that "untrusted vendors in the networks of an ally. could raise future questions about the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive communications".

Along with most European countries, Germany's security agencies are heavily reliant on US intelligence to fight terrorism.

In Germany, Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said on Thursday on a ZDF talk show that Germany did not want to ban Huawei but said that Berlin will change the law to ensure that all components used in the 5G networks will be secure. Huawei and other Chinese companies have been under fire from the Trump administration following several accusations including allegations of been used by the Chinese government for espionage.

The U.S. clash with Huawei includes a deep disagreement over the arrest in Canada and possible extradition of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, who is also the founder's daughter.

Amidst the assurance of German that the risk involving Huawei can be contained, Grenell said in the letter that the Chinese government could legally compel any Chinese company to assist them in their operations without checks and balance, and therefore, the risks cannot be mitigated.

As scrutiny of Huawei has grown, Australiaand New Zealand have joined the U.S.in barring the company from their 5G networks. And other countries have issued security warnings about Huawei and China, including the Czech Republic and Lithuania.
