According to weather forecast service, "The storm was also expected to bring heavy rain to areas of eastern Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota that already have a good deal of snow on the ground, raising the threat of river flooding".

It claimed blizzard conditions are possible for the Central and Northern High Plains.

Emergency crews responded after a vehicle was swept off a road in Norfolk, Nebraska, and rising water along the Elkhorn River prompted evacuations in the city of 24,000 people.

Heavy snow was falling in northern Arizona and forecasters say unsafe winds in New Mexico are expected to make travel hazardous across much of the state.

National Guard troops were using specialized vehicles to rescue stranded drivers in Colorado as a powerful "bomb cyclone" was expected to continue its march Thursday, unleashing heavy rain and snow on the Midwest plains.

The biggest air travel hub likely to be affected by the snow is Denver International Airport.

From the Palmer divide to the Plains Wednesday, an exceptionally-powerful "bomb cyclone" brought 100 miles per hour wind gusts and conditions rivaling those of a hurricane, except with blinding snow in many places. We saw the west to east differences that we were forecasting.

In New Mexico, heavy winds knocked train cars off the tracks and a funnel cloud was spotted.

Blizzard, fierce winds expected to clobber US Plains states

Winds hit 103 mph in Pine Springs, Tex., and 104 mph in San Augustine Pass, N.M., while a number of locations across Colorado hit 90 mph. There were no immediate reports of injuries. All runways were closed Wednesday because of icy conditions and extremely poor visibility caused by the intense storm, the airport said on Twitter.

Wind gusts of 50 to 70 miles per hour are also expected to move through Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma this week, according to the NWS.

Travel will be unsafe, if not impossible, at times, across areas where the blizzard warning has been issued.

In Colorado, the storm turned deadly when a State Patrol corporal was struck and killed by a vehicle while he was outside helping a auto that slid off of Interstate 76 in Weld County, Colorado, AccuWeather reported.

Severe storms, flash flooding, dense fog, and possible tornadoes are also threats as the storm moves across the central part of the country.

Travel will be unsafe if not impossible as more than 1,000 flights have been cancelled nationwide.

On Wednesday, South Dakota's governor also ordered the closure of state government offices in 39 central and western counties due to winter conditions. But in general, snow will fall over much of North Dakota, with the Fargo-Moorhead area in a snow/rain transition zone, meaning the metro area could receive a mix of rain and snow Wednesday, switching mostly to snow Thursday through Friday morning.
