"So, we have issued directive that no operator with Boeing 737 Max 8 or Max 9 should operate into and outside our airports and this is being carried out", he said.

The United States has joined other nations in grounding Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9 jets, citing new satellite data and evidence from the scene of Sunday's crash of an Ethiopian Airlines plane that killed all 157 on board.

Dubai, the world's busiest airport for worldwide travel, will no longer allow the Boeing 737 MAX 8 or 737 MAX 9 to take off or land on its runways after the controversial models were banned by the United Arab Emirates government. That flight crashed into the Java Sea off Indonesia in October, killing 189 people. The planes were to be delivered through 2030, Danadiputra said. In the notice, Boeing warned pilots that the plane's Angle of Attack (AoA) sensors could give off erroneous readings.

Air Canada, for example, announced it was canceling flights to London following Britain's decision to ban the aircraft.

The plane involved in Sunday's crash was less than four months old, with Ethiopian Airlines saying it was delivered on November 15.

"For a week or two, it will be bedlam and chaos", said Marvin Ryder, an assistant professor of marketing at McMaster University.

Garneau said he will reverse the ban when he sees the "smoking gun that will explain what happened with this particular flight".

And Turkish Airlines, one of the largest carriers in the world, said it was suspending use of its 12 MAX aircraft from Wednesday, until "uncertainty" was clarified.

"There are lots of reasons why aircraft can run into difficulty", Garneau said. "Air Canada Component of CUPE always believes that the safety of passengers and crew must come first", said president Wesley Lesosky. "The investigation team will decide where", the spokesman told Reuters.

Lesosky later sent out a message clarifying that Monday's bulletin wasn't meant to "trivialize concerns" but to provide background information and inform members of their rights. In a dramatic development, the European Aviation Safety Agency has split with the Federal Aviation Administration in banning the Max, leaving the U.S. regulator isolated in insisting that it's still safe to fly.

Air Canada said it will grant affected customers on its roughly 75 daily Max 8 flights a full fee waiver - though that may not cover higher fares for a rebooked flight - along with "the ability to obtain a full refund".

Transport Minister Marc Garneau, announcing the Canadian ban in Ottawa Wednesday morning, said politics didn't play into his decision, nor was it based on American thinking.
