  • Emergency personnel rescue a child at the site of a building which collapsed in Lagos

Emergency services attend the scene after a building collapsed in Lagos, Nigeria, March 13, 2019.

A child could be seen being rescued and carried away through a crowd of people.

Several news outlets reported at least eight people died, as of Wednesday night.

The incident took place near Itafaji market on Lagos Island in Nigeria's economic capital at around 10am (0900 GMT).

Responding to a concern raised by a resident on the increase in illegal schools in the area, Governor Ambode said all schools that fall within that category would be closed down. Instead, as the rescue work continued, the president's personal assistant posted on Twitter a photo of a gleaming new terminal at the airport in the capital, Abuja.

Awobodu said the five-storey building with a pent house that collapsed yesterday morning killing unspecified number of school children, had been earmarked for demolition because it was discovered to be structurally distressed.

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Jide Idris, who confirmed the casualty figure, said numerous rescued were taken to Lagos Island General Hospital, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), among others.

"The third floor of the building is housing a private school in the area".

One of them is Lagos Island, a densely-populated area which is one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods.

Reports indicated that the building which had shownsigns of defect, for years, had been marked for demolition, three times, by the Lagos State Government.

"Let the state government look for preventive measures, rather than spending money for evacuation, investigation and remediation after the calamities and damages have occurred", Mr Awobodu said.

Sunday said his family lived on the second floor of the building and he sent his boys to school there so they wouldn't have to travel far.

Obiora Manafa with the Standards Organization of Nigeria told reporters they would analyze samples of the collapsed building's concrete and steel bars "to ascertain the quality. and know whether they complied with the national building code".

NEMA has said that 37 people were rescued alive.

People and rescue teams search through the debris of the collapsed building on Thursday.

Most buildings here "are said not to be in very good condition", Sam Olukoya, a Nigeria-based freelance journalist told NPR's Ofeibea Quist-Arcton.

In September 2014, 116 people died - 84 of them South Africans - when a six-storey building collapsed in Lagos where a celebrity televangelist was preaching.

He called on the relevant agencies to undertake stress tests of buildings to ensure that the structures are not compromised.
