Miami QB Ryan Tannehill traded to Titans for draft picks

  • Perkins Tannehill era marked by frustration and mediocrity but it’s not really his fault

The original anthem protester drew much scorn from Dolphins fans and Miami media, after he wore a Fidel Castro shirt to a press conference.

His contract was to balloon to £14.1m in base salary this year, and he would have counted £20m against the salary cap.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Tannehill has restructured his contract in order to help the deal go through.

In exchange, the Dolphins get a fourth-round pick in 2020 and a seventh-round pick in 2019.

The 30-year-old Tannehill has been the Dolphins starting QB since he was drafted with the eighth overall pick of the 2012 National Football League draft out of Texas A&M. The Dolphins are picking up $5 million of his $7 million salary, but will save $8 million on the cap this year and $25 million on the cap in 2020. He missed the entire 2017 season with the Dolphins after suffering a torn ACL early in training camp.

In his career, Hekker has completed 11 of 19 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown.

And, spoiler alert, the Dolphins do not care one iota about the $5M they're sending to Tennessee.

From the Titans' end the move is probably a reaction, in part, to Marcus Mariota's constant healthy issues. General manager Jon Robinson said Friday that Gabbert will be released. The main remaining question from the trade might be, who plays quarterback for the Dolphins this season? Both have had minimal playing time under center.

What will the Dolphins do at quarterback?
